Purpose of the Study

In accordance with the previous African feminist argument, this study strives to explore African women’s perception of their representation in the U.S. culture. More specifically, the purpose of this study is to examine and compare the ways in which female African immigrants define themselves and the ways in which they are represented in the U.S. media. By doing so, this study strives to answer to the following questions: how do African female immigrants define themselves as “African”? What are different discourses emerging from U.S. media about their representations? What are their reactions to these representations and how do these representations impact them in everyday life?
